The Pediatric Assistant© software is similar to the
Neonatal Assistant©. The program was created at the request of a
pediatric teaching hospital in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex with a large population of pediatric
patients with specific nutritional requirements. The program was developed
based on the needs of physicians, clinical pharmacists and dietetic specialists from that hospital. By meeting with all the caretakers, a product tailored to the needs of their patients was
created.
Physicians use the program to enter TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) orders into the computer for patients who cannot take in food orally. The program evaluates the orders for completeness, compatibility, and patient safety. If the order "passes" all of the rules based logic, then the order is sent via FTP to an offsite compounding company for preparation.
As with Neonatal Assistant©, Pediatric Assistant© decreases errors which occur naturally in a manual system. The program uses rules-based algorithms to verify the accuracy and compatibility of the order in a prospective manner. Customized reports are available. The program reduces costs associated with a pharmacist checking the handwritten order and contacting the physician and nurse to discuss changes and errors.
